Wetland and Stream Training

Dr. James Gregory is an expert on the NC Division of Water Quality Methodology for Identification of Intermittent and Perennial Streams and Their Origins. He has worked closely with the Wetlands and Stormwater Branch of NCDWQ for more than 10 years on development of the stream identification methodology and conducting training courses for government agencies and the private sector. With the assistance of several highly experienced aquatic ecologists who are benthic macroinvertebrate specialists, Dr. Gregory has conducted a number of stream identification courses focused on the NCDWQ methodology in states around the Southeast, from Virginia to Alabama. On a request basis, Dr. Gregory and his WatHydro team will conduct stream identification courses in any state outside North Carolina for agencies or companies or will schedule courses open to anyone via a standard registration fee when demand warrants.

Watershed Assessment and GIS Services

The WatHydro team has tremendous knowledge, skills, and experience in all aspects of watershed assessment: (1) inventories of vegetation, forests, and soils; (2) inventories and delineation of streams and wetlands; (3) map assessments of watershed characteristics via GIS applications; (4) applications of GPS and GIS in the creation of maps and geodatabases of maps and inventory data; and (5) many other related natural resources assessments.

Hydrology: Watersheds, Forests, Wetlands

With more than 34 years experience in teaching, research, outreach, and consulting in the fields of forest and watershed and wetlands hydrology, Dr. Gregory has a unique background to assist with a wide range of projects and issues related to hydrology. Dr.’s Gregory and Colson are experts in hydrologic modeling and can provide assistance in assessing modeling efforts or in conducting modeling projects. Dr. Colson has extensive experience in GIS applications for hydrologic modeling and in the applications of HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS.

Hydrologic Impacts of Development

Conducting assessments of the hydrologic and environmental impacts of proposed development projects, including review of development plans and stormwater plans, is a unique service of the WatHydro team.

Wetlands Regulations

Dr. Gregory is an expert on Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations that implement Section 404. He has worked closely with the Corps and the forestry community throughout his career on wetlands regulations applicable to forestry. The WatHydro team has much experience in preparing, submitting, and supervising the review of permit applications.

Expert Witness Services

WatHydro has considerable experience in legal cases, providing expert advice, collecting data and conducting GIS analyses for natural resource assessments related to legal cases, and serving as an expert witness.

Next Stream Identification Training Course

Watershed Hydrology Consultants LLC has scheduled a Stream Identification Training Course for March 21-24, 2011 in Macon, GA. The 4-day course follows a newly developed agenda that focuses on the NC Division of Water Quality (NCDWQ) Methodology for Identification of Intermittent and Perennial Streams and Their Origins as well as increased emphasis on the sampling, preservation, and identification of benthic macroinvertebrates. The courses meets the Georgia Department of Transportation requirement for a stream identification training course for consultants who wish to conduct stream determinations for GADOT.

The Stream Identification Training Course is open to anyone who wishes to learn the NCDWQ stream identification methodology or who wishes to strengthen their skills in benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and identification.
